MACHINE DESCRIPTION: As a HYBRID Multi-Tasking system, the VTC-300C FSW combines vertical machining center milling capabilities with those of Friction Stir Welding (FSW). The machine features a powerful CAT 40 taper spindle, full vertical traveling column design and fixed table for machining extremely long and heavy workpieces. With a table center partition, the machine work envelope can be transformed into two separate work areas. This allows the machine to be in cycle in one work area while a part is being set up in the other. The machine also delivers fast rapid traverse rates to reduce non-cut times. The machine’s FSW package uses frictional heat and forging pressure to create full-penetration, defect-free welded joints with greater strength than those produced through conventional methods. The Mazak FSW head incorporates a non-consumable tool and a solid-state joining process to join two metal plates without melting the material. Commonly considered a forging process, FSW is well suited for joining alloys with low melting points, including aluminum, copper and brass.
